Yael Bartana (born in Israel, 1970) assumes the role of a contemporary observer and a pre-enactor. She wields art like a precision tool, dissecting power structures, straddling the nuanced boundary between the sociological and the imaginative realms. Over the span of two decades, she has grappled with the shadowy recesses of collective unconscious desires, resuscitating the communal imagination. She has delved into the dissection of group identities and the art of persuasion’s (an-)aesthetic forms. Through films, installations, photographs, staged performances, and public monuments, Yael Bartana meticulously explores subjects including national identity, trauma, and displacement. She often navigates these themes via ceremonies, memorials, public rituals, and collective gatherings.

Bartana’s body of work has garnered global recognition and has found a place within the collections of esteemed museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Presently, she resides and creates in both Berlin and Amsterdam.
