Vera Frenkel, born on November 10, 1938, is a Canadian artist based in Toronto, known for her multidisciplinary approach. Her diverse body of work, spanning installations, videotapes, performances, and new media projects, explores themes such as human migration, cultural memory, and the increasing bureaucratization of experience. Frenkel, originally from Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, spent her childhood in England and later settled in Canada. She earned a Fine Arts degree from McGill University in 1959 and continued her studies in Montreal under Arthur Lismer and Albert Dumouchel. Since the early 1970s, Frenkel has exhibited both nationally and internationally, with notable displays at venues like Documenta IX, the Offenes Kulturhaus in Linz, the Setagaya Art Museum in Tokyo, the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Biennale di Venezia. Key works, including components of the series “The Secret Life of Cornelia Lumsden: A Remarkable Story” (1979-86).
