Born in 1983, Robert Zhao Renhui is a Singaporean artist. He completed his BA degree in photography at the Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, in 2005. He went on to earn his Masters degree from the London College of Communication at the University of the Arts London in 2011. While photography remains his preferred medium, Robert Zhao Renhui often employs a multidisciplinary approach by juxtaposing images with documents and objects.
Within his artwork, he delves into the environment, humanity’s connection with nature, and the moral and ethical aspects related to these themes. He explores how our beliefs and perspectives influence our assumptions about the natural world. Notably, Robert Zhao Renhui has been honored with prestigious awards, including the Deutsche Bank Award In Photography from the University of the Arts London in 2011, the Young Artist Award from Singapore in 2010, and being named a finalist in the 12th Benesse Prize at the Singapore Art Museum in 2019.
His solo exhibitions encompass a diverse range of venues and titles, such as “The Lines We Draw” at ShanghART Singapore (2020), “New Forest” at Mind Set Art Center, Taipei (2019), “The Institute of Critical Zoologists Final Report of the Christmas Island Expert Working Group” at NTU Centre for Contemporary Art, Singapore (2018), and many others.
Furthermore, his work has been featured in various group exhibitions worldwide, including “Tonight The Air Is Warm” at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, London, UK (2021), “From the Mundane World” at He Art Museum, Guangdong (2020), “In The Forest, Even The Air Breathes” at GAMeC Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Bergamo, Italy (2020), and more.
Robert Zhao Renhui’s artistic contributions are housed in significant public and private collections, such as Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac in Paris, France; Statoil Art Collection in Stavanger, Norway; National Museum of Singapore; Kadist Art Foundation in San Francisco, U.S.A; and Singapore Art Museum.
