In her series “Untitled Film Stills,” American visual artist Cindy Sherman adopts diverse stereotypical female personas, drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of 1950s and 1960s Hollywood, Film noir, B movies, and European art-house films. These portrayals encompass clichés and feminine archetypes deeply ingrained in the cultural imagination, such as the office girl, bombshell, girl on the run, housewife, and more. Throughout the series, the characters consistently avert their gaze from the camera and extend beyond the frame. Sherman immerses herself in each role, embodying the dual positions of both creator and subject within the artwork. Crafted predominantly between 1977 and 1980, this series garnered global recognition and received endorsement by Madonna for display at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1997.
